The Singapore Gold Cup is a 2200-metre Thoroughbred horse race that is annually held by the end of November at the Kranji Racecourse in Singapore. This Group One race is contested left-handed and is open to local race horses aged three years and up. This race is the third leg of the Singapore Triple Crown following the Kranji Mile and the Raffles Cup.
This race was first held in 1924 at the Serangoon Road Race Course at Farrer Park. In 1933, it was then moved to the Bukit Timah Race Course and it was staged there until 1999 when Bukit Timah was closed and replaced by the new Kranji Racecourse.
No races were staged from 1942 to 1946 due to the Second World War. In 1958, Abdul Mawi became the first Singaporean jockey to win the Gold Cup. Fifty years later, El Dorado became the first ever Japanese-bred race horse that was trained in Singapore to win a Singapore Group 1 race. Since 2002, international entries were not allowed to compete at the Gold Cup.
Since it was inaugurated, the race has been conducted at various distances. From 1924-1931, it was staged at exactly 2011.25 metres. In 1932, it was adjusted to 1932 metres. From 1933-1935, the race distance was brought back to exactly 2011.25 metres. From 1936-1941, the race distance of the Singapore Gold Cup was about 2011.25 metres. In 1948, it was exactly 2011.25 metres.
From 1949-1952, its distance is 2044.19 metres while from 1953-1964, it was brought back to about 2011.15 metres. From 1965-1968, it was exactly 2011.25 metres while from 1969-1975, it was staged at 2212.375 metres. Its current distance of 2200 metres was first established in 1976.
The prize money pool for the Singapore Gold Cup risen dramatically over the years. From its prize pool of $1,600 in 1924, it became $61,500 in 1973. It got even higher when the race had sponsorship for the first time in 1991. Then sponsor Piaget shouldered S$200,000 of the S$600,000 prize.
The following year, Piaget increased their sponsorship to S$250,000 which brings the race’s total prize money to S$700,000. In 1999, the prize money purse of the Singapore Gold Cup reached the S$1 million mark. At present, the race’s prize pool is at S$1,350,000.
At the current distance of 2200 metres, Zatopek II recorded the fastest winning time in 1996 when he finished with the time of 2:12.5. Meanwhile, the race horse with the most number of Singapore Gold Cup wins is Three Rings with three. He won in 1954, 1956 and 1957. For owners, Zatopek II has the most wins with five and they garnered their victories in 1974, 1977, 1985, 1991 and 1995.
For the jockeys, T. Farthing and Alan J. Trevena are tied with three apiece. Farthing won the Singapore Gold Cup editions of 1936, 1939 and 1941 while Trevena won the races of 1963, 1966 and 1968. For the trainers, Ivan W. Allan has nine Singapore Gold Cups under his name and he won them in 1973, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1989 and 1990.
