The Raffles Cup is a 1800-metre Thoroughbred horse race that is annually held during the first week of November at the Kranji Racecourse in Singapore. This left-handed race is open to horses of at least three years of age.
The Raffles Cup is staged under weight-for-age rules with fillies and mares given a 1.5 kilogram allowance. This race has a prize pool of S$500,000.
The Raffles Cup was first staged in 1991 at the Bukit Timah racecourse and it was held there annually until 1999 when the track was closed down to be replaced by the Kranji racecourse. From 1991 to 2000, the race’s distance is 1600 metres and its current distance of 1800 metres was first used in 2001. The race is named after Singapore founder Sir Stamford Raffles.
The race is named after Singapore founder Sir Stamford Raffles and it is the second leg of the Singapore Triple Crown. Coming before the Raffles Cup is the 1600-metre Kranji Mile while it is followed by the Singapore Gold Cup.
As for the race’s records, Chevron set the fastest winning time for the Raffles Cup after winning the 2008 edition of the race in 1:48.0. Meanwhile, Auric Stable has the most wins by an owner after garnering a three-peat from 1993-1995. Likewise, jockey Kim Clapperton won three Raffles Cups from 1993-1995 while trainer The Choon Beng won the Raffles Cups of 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1995.
