The Hawks-trained Rainbow Styling surprised Australian horse racing fans by claiming an upset at the 2000-metre, Group 3 Naturalism Stakes which is regarded as one of the lead-up races for the Caulfield Cup.
Adding insult for the Caulfield Cup bound race horses, Rainbow Styling is not nominated to run at the 2010 Caulfield Cup. Though he won a big portion of the $125,000 prize pool, the six-year-old Zabeel gelding won a very important shot at this year’s Caulfield Cup.
Carrying a 14.00 horse racing betting odd, Rainbow Styling showed his true racing colour by making a push at the 50-metre mark to take the lead and claim the victory over the Tony Vasil-trained Valdemoro by a neck. The top Naturalism Stakes pre-race favourite Moudre came in at third place. Since he did not win this race, Moudre has to qualify for the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup via another race.
Though he finished in third place, Moudre pulled off a strong finish for he came to life after being behind by 12 lengths at the Naturalism Stakes. With Moudre’s latest performance, he now has an 11.00 betting odd for the 2010 Caulfield Cup. Dariana, the runner-up of the Underwood Stakes, is not the top Caulfield Cup pre-race favourite with a 7.00 betting odd as per SportsBet’s betting odds. Valdemoro now has an equal 13.00 betting odds with Herculian Prince.
Given the handicap nature of the Caulfield Cup, the better-performing and older horses usually have an advantage coming into the race. This is one big reason why top-flight horses win the race more often than not. Some of the high-class race horses that have won the Caulfield Cup in recent years are Let’s Elope, Northerly, Ethereal, Elvstroem and Master O’ Reilly.
The Caulfield Cup is the highlight of the Caulfield Spring Racing Carnival and it is often regarded as a lead-up to the more prestigious Melbourne Cup which happens every November. In fact, a strong run at the Caulfield Cup can get a race horse an outright ticket to the Melbourne Cup. At present, eleven horses have achieved the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double and the last race horse to do so was Ethereal in 2001.
