Laxon Singapore Derby Triple Threat
Six-time premier trainer Laurie Laxon will be well represented at the Group 1 S$1.15 million Emirates Singapore Derby on Sunday. For this 2000-metre race at the Kranji Racecouse, Laxon’s battalion will be led by consistent galloper Intercept. Aside from this horse, the New Zealand trainer will be represented by Noble Manor and Hazza.
Noble Manor will be ridden by 2009 Emirates Singapore Derby winning jockey Ronnie Stewart while Hazza will be navigated by apprentice Ruzaini Supien. Meanwhile, Joao Moreira will still steer Intercept at the Singapore Derby after their partnership won the 1600-metre Group 1 Patron’s Bowl on their last team-up. Laxon guaranteed that his three horses are in good condition for the big race.

Intercept will be competing in his first Singapore Derby after 17 Singapore starts that won him seven races. Also, he has only finished lower than fourth place in all of those 17 races. However, the gelding has only races beyond 1600 metres once wherein he finished sixth behind Super Gold in the Group 3, 1800-metre Moonbeam Vase last March.
However, Laxon is not concerned by the fact that this is Intercept’s first 2000-metre race due to his lineage. His sire Zerpour won the 2500-metre Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the Flemington racecourse while his dam Haughty Miss is the half-sister of Melbourne Cup runner-up and Victoria Derby winner Second Coming.
Also, Laxon added that Intercept had great training sessions since his last victory and that he had a great training with Hazza. Hazza became a contender at the Singapore Derby after defeating Langstraat in a 1800-metre Kranji Stakes C race last month. That was Hazza’s fifth Singapore start and he was purchased with the Singapore Derby in consideration.
However, Laxon added that Hazza experienced a tendon injury that forced the horse to take some time off. When the injury healed, Laxon said that the horse had a hard time and they were having doubts if they can have him compete in the race that he luckily won. Hazza is from the lineage of King of Kings.
Meanwhile, Noble Manor is faced with a drastic jump in distance after finishing in last place in a 1400-metre race last June. It will also be his first race beyond 1600 metres. Laxon is confident that Noble Manor will be a horse to reckon with if he will have a good start. As a three-year-old, he finished fourth in the Guineas and his maturity showed in his trial with Race Ahead.
