Apprentice jockey Muhd Firdaus registered his first ever victory with the help of the John Meagher-trained By Appointment. The Singapore Training Academy for Racing graduate willed his horse during the last furlong of the race to win the $35,000, 1200-metre Class 5 Division 1 race over race favourite Mr. Happy. This is the four-year-old horse’s second win in 20 starts.
The 25-year-old jockey from Choa Chu Kang enjoyed this moment that he has been waiting for a long time. He dedicated the win to Meagher that gave him a ton of advice since joining the trainer’s stable four year ago. He also thanked horse trainers Steven Burridge and Sam Chua for the support and lessons that they gave to him. Firdaus also said that he wanted to become a jockey from the first time he competed in a race at the Kranji racecourse.
Being the master of apprentices, Meagher has a big influence in the careers of Steven King and Brett Prebble who is now the top jockey in Singapore. Meagher said that he is all praises for Firdaus but he also told him that he should not get swell-headed. He also believed that Firdaus has a lot of upside for Firdaus judges the pace very well, has commendable work ethics and a class act.
Meagher added that though the senior jockey still dominate the Singapore horse racing scene, Firdaus will have a bright career ahead of him. Meagher also praised Steven Burridge for letting Firdaus ride in his horses which can help improve his skill.
