The 2000-metre, Group 1 Singapore Emirates Derby is regarded as a highly contested race. But after the Post Position Draw ceremony for the S1.15 million race, some of the pre-race favourites got unfavourable draws. For example, Stewards’ Cup winner Ghozi and Patron’s Bowl winner Intercept drew the 18th and 19th barrier respectively in the 20-horse field with four Emergency Acceptors.

There were also cheers when some of the competitors drew inside barriers. However, the results will be drawn not from the barrier but from the race itself. Sixteen race horses will give everything that they have to win the Emirates Singapore Derby.
Trainer Laurie Laxon has three competitors in the Emirates Singapore Derby namely Noble Manor, Hazza and Intercept. Intercept drew the 19th barrier and Laxon said that jockey Joao Moreira must have a perfect ride to overcome the challenges that the barrier presents.
Hazza is on barrier number 12 but he will be on barrier eight if the emergencies will not start. Meanwhile, Noble Manor got the first barrier for he can course through the speed and he can provide a surprise as long as he does not pull.
Trainer Patrick Shaw has two entries to the Emirates Singapore Derby with My Drumbeat getting the second barrier. Jockey Barend Vorster is very happy about the horse’s draw and this is the reason why the horse was bought. He also said that My Drumbeat once finished second to Irish Derby winner Fame and Glory in a 2000-metre race. Shaw’s other entry, Escamonda, will start from the 13th barrier.
Meanwhile, John O’Hara will be represented by three race horses. Samurai Phoenix got the third barrier while Ghozi will try to win the Emirates Singapore Derby from the 18th gate. His other competitor, Tarankali is designated as the Emergency Acceptor 1 and he could start from barrier eleven.
Local trainer Sam Chua will have his horse Super Gold run from the fifth barrier of the Kranji racecourse. Chua has expressed happiness with the draw and he got the inside draw that he was hoping for since Super Gold is a front running horse.
Bruce Marsh will join the Emirates Singapore Derby picture with All Elusive that is starting from the 7th barrier and Race Ahead that will start from the 10th barrier. However, All Elusive can get to start from the fifth barrier if Emergency Acceptors Supreme General and Solid Wood will not start.
Brian Dean’s Phantom Knight drew the eighth barrier while Powerful Ruler will come out of barrier 17. Dean commented that while Phantom Knight got a good draw, Powerful Ruler’s fate now lies in the hands of jockey Vlad Duric.
Cliff Brown will only have one entry, Ravages, which will start from barrier number 14. Brown commented that barrier one would not have been ideal but he has a chance to start from barrier ten if the emergencies do not start. However, Brown is a bit worried if there is enough pace in the race that Ravages can operate with.
The other competitors in the Emirates Singapore Derby are Leslie Khoo’s Pina Colarda (barrier 15) and Supreme General (Emergency Acceptor 3 – barrier 6), Desmond Koh’s New Rose Wood (barrier 16), Michael Freedman’s Zac Beat It (barrier 20), Stephen Gray’s Langstraat (emergency acceptor 2 – barrier 9) and Len Treloar’s Solid Wood (emergency acceptor 4 – barrier 4).
