formDays before the $1.15 million, 2000-metre Group One Emirates Singapore Derby, trainer Brian Dean has no doubt in his mind that his race horses will get finished first and second place. This shows how much confidence Dean has with his race horses Powerful Ruler and Phantom Knight in preparation for their biggest race ever.

Dean is confident that even though the race is staged via wet and dry conditions, he has every situation covered. Despite being a pacer or a backmarker, Dean is in high spirits that his team will be triumphant at the Emirates Singapore Derby.

Since this is a major race, Dean has secured the services of two of the best horse racing jockeys around. Powerful Rider will be taken over by Vlad Duric who is in second place at the Jockey Premiership Table behind Joao Moreira. Meanwhile, triple Melbourne Cup winner Glen Boss will try to gain a victory with Phantom Knight.

For Powerful Ruler, Dean originally asked for the services of Australian jockey Damien Oliver but the jockey has committed to the Group 1 July Cup in Newmarket, England on Friday. Dean recalled that he spoke to Oliver during the jockey’s stint at the SIA Cup and Oliver said that he would like to come back and race again in Singapore.

Because of which, Oliver was Dean’s top priority for the Emirates Singapore Derby. But when Oliver has made his commitment for David Hayes to ride Niconi, his availability has been in jeopardy already. This prompted Dean to contact Duric as soon as possible. With Boss handling Phantom Knight, Duric’s partnership with Powerful Ruler is starting to pay off.

In preparation for the Emirates Singapore Derby, Dean said that both horses have undergone a spotless and uninterrupted preparation. Now that their training went smooth, Dean hopes that his horses would get good barriers to gain an advantage coming into the race. Dean added that it would be better for Powerful Ruler to get an inside barrier to work on their battle plan to perfection.

Dean recalled that the said horse performs better when he coming from behind and not as a pacer. This claim has not been more evident than the Patron’s Bowl wherein Powerful Ruler lost despite pacing the race. Dean believes that an inside barrier draw for Powerful Ruler will increase his winning chances.

Also, Dean recalled that Powerful Ruler has only raced in one 2000-metre race before the April 23 QEII Cup. That race was staged under wet and slippery conditions which contributed to the non-victory of Powerful Ruler. But with great physique and an experienced jockey, Dean expects Powerful Ruler to finish on top.

In contrast, Phantom Knight is more of a backmarker. Therefore, the barrier is not as crucial to his cause unlike Powerful Ruler. Dean said that Phantom Knight comes from behind and finishes in a flurry. Also, rain won’t hurt his chances at the Emirates Singapore Derby especially that Boss is with him. Dean is confident that the veteran jockey has all the knowledge and skill to bring Phantom Knight to victory.
